Water and a Few Mud Walls
MKLM missioner Jason Obergfell has been working on a 10-mile long drinking water project in Tapacari, Bolivia. Here he reflects: “And so I learned what poverty is really all about. Poverty means…that you are not able to have control over most of the events in your life…That is what being a Maryknoll Lay Missioner is about. We are constantly working to address basic needs like access to adequate quantities of clean drinking water. But we are also called to live with the spirit of Christ. We are called to a deeper relationship with each person we encounter and called to a deeper understanding of poverty in general.”

Her First New Set of Wheels! Just as many American youth wait with joyful excitement to climb into their first shiny new set of wheels, so, too, did Sejarina.
Hers would not be a new Mustang, or a new Bug. Rather, Sejarina, an 18 year old East Timorese girl waited patiently for MKLM missioner Bill Velicky to put the finishing touches on her brand new wheelchair. The bright and cheery girl was disabled by polio when she was a child. She has only been able to crawl to get around because of paralysis and ftractures. She walks using her hands protected by flip flops. Over the years she has actually worn off some of her toes down to stumps because they drag along the ground.
