About Us: Who We Are — Leadership Team Sam Stanton – Executive Director Alicia Butkiewicz – Director of Mission Operations
Sam Stanton, Executive Director Sam Stanton was appointed Executive Director of Maryknoll Lay Missioners in June 2008. As MKLM's Executive Director, Sam is responsible for the organization's overall direction setting, planning, and evaluation of global operations. Sam graduated from Kansas State with a B.S. in Social Work and a minor in Sociology. Sam also attended graduate classes in Theology Studies at Notre Dame.
Sam has extensive experience in nonprofit organizational administration. Before joining Maryknoll Lay Missioners in 1985, Sam held positions as Program Director for Catholic Social Services of the diocese of Phoenix, Arizona; as a Holy Cross Associate in Chile; as Social Ministries Coordinator for Little Flower Parish, South Bend, Indiana; and in the Holy Cross Justice and Peace Commission at Notre Dame, also in Indiana.
Sam has, in his MKLM ministries, continued his commitment to outreach of the Catholic Church, Latin American affairs, and social development. He has worked in rural ministry and social development projects in rural southern Chile, serving as the Director of the Social Services Department of the Diocese of Linares, Chile.
Sam returned from Chile in 1991 to serve as the Director of, what was then, the Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers Lay Mission Program. During his tenure, the “program” transitioned to the current autonomous entity, Maryknoll Lay Missioners, and Sam served on the first leadership team of the fledgling organization.
In 1996, Sam and his family returned to Chile and to the diocese of Linares where he resumed his work in social development programs and education, and also served as MKLM’s Chile Regional Coordinator and MKLM’s Latin America co-Area Coordinator.
In 2004, Sam and his wife Cecilia, also an MKLM missioner, returned to the United States where Sam has served as MKLM’s U.S. East Regional Coordinator and in MKLM’s Advancement Department.
Sam grew up on the great plains of central Kansas.
