Affiliates share in the mission and family spirit of the three Maryknoll entities: the Maryknoll Sisters, the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, and Maryknoll Lay Missioners. Maryknoll Affiliates began in 1991 and has evolved into a loosely knit organization of local Chapters. Affiliates participate in Maryknoll's mission primarily by building mission awareness within themselves and in their daily contacts in society. Where possible, Affiliates participate directly in Maryknoll's mission activity locally or globally. This includes being involved in Maryknoll's mission promotion and education activities and working in cooperation with Maryknoll's Office for Global Concerns. Many Affiliates, while maintaining a global vision, do mission work with the national and local church and for their local communities. Some Affiliates participate in overseas mission work for short-term periods at Maryknoll Mission sites.
