Our Work: U.S. Programs — Friends Across Borders (FAB) | Follow Up The ultimate benefit of the immersion experience with Friends Across Borders pivots on your follow up to the cross-cultural encounter. We presume all participants will experience a desire to respond in some concrete way. Some may be deeply moved. | Cecilia Espinoza, Maryknoll Lay Missioner Friends Across Borders Manager P.O. At the follow up session/gathering, Friends Across Borders provides resources and encouragement to continue to apply new learnings and perspectives: | We invite you to participate in one follow-up conference call or meeting after your return. We set in conjuction date/time for the follow up session/gathering after the trip. | | We will send information about Maryknoll Lay Missioners or Maryknoll Affiliates for those considering joining our organization and continuing further discernment. | | We invite our participants to share their experience by writing something for a local newspaper, parish bulletin, diocesan newspaper or by giving presentations at schools, universities and churches. | | We give specific recommendations for service and/or giving which both arise from the immersion experience and root themselves in each person’s “call” to service and mission. | | We will send information regarding our Office for Global Concerns to keep you in touch with some of the issues that you encounter on your cross-cultural experience that requires further promotion and action to bring justice and hope to that part of the world. |

Recall the Ritual Process: The Ritual Process marks major moments of life’s passages, birth, adolescence, marriage, death and comprises the three stages of Separation, the “in-between” or liminality, and Reintegration. Professionals have dedicated decades of their lives examining the ritual process to better understand why and how major transformations of our lives seem to follow this three-stage pattern. Separation (Before), Luminal Experience (The Trip), Reintegration (After the Trip). The Reintegration phase of the ritual process demands that participants alter their choices to reflect the changes they have undergone throughout the Immersion Trip experience. Participants need to re-integrate, to build harmony into and to make whole their inner hearts with their outer lives.
