Sixteen-year-old Luisa* is the eldest of four children. Her family lives in a single-room home in an impoverished section of Cochabamba, Bolivia. The dwelling, which Luisa’s parents built themselves, has no running water. The family lacks the paperwork needed to demonstrate their legal right to occupy their lot or meager structure. This makes it difficult for them to obtain public services.
Luisa desperately wanted to attend school, but knew her family could not afford the tuition. She and her mother, Primitiva, decided to visit the Centro Vicente Canas community center (CVC) to ask for help funding Luisa’s education. MKLM missioner Lauren Vater oversees the center’s educational scholarship program and was determined to find a way to help bright and outgoing Luisa gain access to the education she so badly wanted.
CVC granted Luisa an educational scholarship. The scholarship covers Luisa’s matriculation fees, allowing her to study hotel and restaurant management at the local polytechnic school. Through CVC’s scholarship program, recipients and their parents attend workshops, meetings, and other gatherings. Social workers and community center staff can connect with and assess the needs of each recipient. CVC also provides school supplies to Luisa’s siblings, as well as to 50 other neighborhood children.
Although the family’s financial situation has not improved, they have new hope for ending the cycle of poverty. With the help of CVC, Luisa is obtaining income-generating skills. When she completes her studies, she will be fully equipped to earn a steady income at a hotel or restaurant and contribute to her family's needs.
